The College of Veterinary Medicineat MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Our Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program boasts a unique curricular structure, which provides nearly two years of hands-on training in the college’s general and specialty clinics. Additionally, the College is a leader in the training of Undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students in the areas of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Pathobiology. The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery is dedicated to developing and disseminating knowledge to improve the health and well-being of animals and people through instruction, innovative research, service, and leadership. The department is home to the college’s Veterinary Health Center where our faculty provide clinical care, teach, and develop innovative treatments and therapies.
The successful candidates will be expected to perform the following duties:
Ensure timely and accurate triage and care for all cases arriving on emergency during daytime, swing, weekend, and overnight shifts. Schedules will be based upon the needs of the service. Holiday shifts will be divided equitably amongst clinicians.
Communicate with clients and referring veterinarians in a timely manner for emergency case management, in both written and verbal formats.
Supervise, direct, and teach students and interns in all aspects of case management, including financial updates for pet owners.
Work with Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (SAECC) faculty, residents, interns, technicians, and students for case transfers and ongoing management and oversight of inpatients.
Work with all small animal services during case transfer and management of inpatients in the intensive care unit.
Provide input to be used in evaluation of all personnel working in support of the SAECC service, including licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and student employees.
Participate with SAECC faculty and house officers to improve knowledge of the discipline and management of the section.
Participate in departmental and hospital governance.
These positions are 1.0 FTE / 12-month appointment.

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment in specialties, such as emergency medicine and critical care, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, cardiovascular medicine and surgery, and orthopedic surgery. Our community medicine practice also offers preventive medicine, dentistry and routine small animal outpatient services. The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is the only nationally accredited diagnostic laboratory in Missouri and one of only five in the Midwest. It handles more than 51,000 diagnostic cases a year and serves all of Missouri’s 114 counties and surrounding states by ...performing approximately 167,000 diagnostic tests annually. The facility supports toxicology, histopathology, serology, bacteriology, molecular biology and virology diagnostic laboratories. It also provides the opportunity for veterinary medical students to receive instruction in diagnostic laboratory medicine.
